Letter from Dr. Barry Howard
February 22, 2021
Dear Wieuca Family:
Have you ever wondered what the most frequently addressed topic in the Bible is? You might think the most often mentioned topic is salvation, or heaven, or sin. But more than any other subject, the Bible addresses how we are to manage what we have been given.
Yesterday I shared a message about the first phrase of our mission and vision statement, which is “Being Faithful Stewards” (I Peter 4:7-11). In case you missed it, here is a brief summary:
One of the primary ways we honor God is by the way we manage our stuff. We either honor or dishonor God in the way that we manage our resources and opportunities.
- Stewardship refers to the way we manage all the resources in our care. Stewardship is our management responsibility over all assets that God places in our care. According to today’s text, stewardship includes how we manage our thoughts, how we manage our speech, how we exercise hospitality, how we serve, and how we manage our financial accounts or portfolios. Randy Alcorn, author of The Treasure Principle, describes stewardship this way: If God was the owner, I was the manager. I needed to adopt a steward's mentality toward the assets He had entrusted - not given - to me. A steward manages assets for the owner's benefit. The steward carries no sense of entitlement to the assets he manages. It's his job to find out what the owner wants done with his assets, then carry out his will.
- The scope of stewardship includes our time, talent, and treasure. In I Peter 4:10 from yesterday’s text, the writer mentions the various forms of stewardship. Regarding time, we can express our love for God in the way we manage our calendars, balance work and play, and navigate opportunities. Regarding talent, we can glorify God by the way we use our spiritual gifts, human talents, and natural aptitudes to advance God’s mission in the world. Regarding treasure, we can honor God by bringing our tithes and offerings into the storehouse. In Malachi 3:10 (The Message), we are commanded, “Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple. Test me in this and see if I don't open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams.
- The discipline of stewardship summons us to continually re-evaluate and re-appropriate our priorities and commitments. Like a piano or guitar, our loyalties need to be re-tuned. Like the wheels of our automobile, our priorities get out of alignment, and need to be realigned. Our commitments not only define us, they also refine us. Maya Angelou summed it up this way: “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.”
- Faithful stewardship is the fuel that energizes mission and ministry. Cheerful and generous stewardship empowers effective ministry. At Wieuca our greatest asset is our people. However, it takes the faithful appropriation of the time, talent, and treasure of God’s people to energize ministry. What we are doing at Wieuca is unique! But it will take a radical commitment of the time, talent, and treasure of the existing church family for us to build the future to which God is calling us.
Why is the phrase, “Being faithful stewards” first on our mission statement? First, it describes who we are and who we want to be. Second, faithful stewardship is required to make everything else in the mission statement possible.
As we continue growing to become better stewards of our time, talent and treasure, here are a few highlights for you to consider:
- This Sunday, as we conclude our series on The Mission, I will be sharing an encouraging word about “Being Kingdom Trailblazers” (II Timothy 1:6-7). Invite a friend to join us online at www.wieuca.org or on the Church at Wieuca Facebook page.
- We continue to invite those who are ready to return for in-person worship to join us in the Peachtree Room each Sunday at 11 o’clock. We will continue to practice healthy distancing and to wear facial coverings for all on-campus activities, including worship. We will move beyond pandemic conditions soon, but until then we want everyone to be as safe as possible.
- Our church office is currently open for scheduled meetings and appointments only. For all on-campus gatherings, please plan to wear a facial covering, and call the staff person with whom you are meeting once you arrive in the parking lot so they can meet you at the door.
- This month our prayer focus is “Pray for our community.” Joining us in praying for our community, especially as we address issues related to justice, equality, and recovery from the pandemic.
- Wednesday Night Live (Kidstown) and WIN (Youth) are currently meeting on Wednesday nights via Zoom at 6 o’clock. Collide also meets this Thursday at 7. Contact Angie Durden (adurden@wieuca.org) or Victoria Lawson (vlawson@wieuca.org) for more information.
- Ladies’ Winter Bible Study on ZOOM will continue on Thursday February 25. The group is studying LET. IT. GO. How to Stop Running the Show & Start Walking in Faith by Karen Ehman. We will meet every other week at noon. This humorous, yet spiritually practical book will help you learn how to control what you should, trust God with what you can’t, and more importantly, decide which one is which! Contact Angie at adurden@wieuca.org for more details.
- Your faithful stewardship empowers our ministries. Thank you for giving cheerfully and consistently to the ministries of Wieuca. I invite you to join the many dedicated Wieuca members who are supporting our ministries with their tithes and offerings. You can give via our online portal at www.wieuca.org, by electronic draft from your bank, by texting GIVE to 404.620.3773, or by mailing your check to 3626 Peachtree Rd NW, 30326.
Make sure and check the church website at www.wieuca.org for additional information.
Amy Carmichael reminds us, “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”
I am honored to serve alongside you as we flesh out our mission and vision.
